This is a floating cinema on the private island of Yao Noi in the Andaman Sea, Thailand, providing unique movie experiences. The floating cinema is in fact a temporary raft auditorium designed by architect Ole Sheeren in collaboration with the “Film on the Rocks Yao Noi” Foundation.
This is a collection of rafts, dubbed as Archipelago Cinema in which a screen was inserted in front of the Andaman limestone outcroppings. The audience floats over the ocean, and focuses on the images that appear on the screen.
The floating cinema, Cine Archipiélago, was originally designed to ensure that the Film on the Rocks festival
Yao Noi, which brought together actors, writers, designers and artists, existed on a different planet. A group of avid film fans experienced a unique cinematic moment in the middle of the rocky and private coast of Yao Noi.
The architect adopted local techniques to develop his floating cinema, using rafts used by local fishermen and joining the wooden frames with rubber strips to create blockages that were wrapped in mosquito nets.
